Distance Learning Cons

Distance learning is never a perfect programme and is characterised by a couple of disadvantages that need to be considered by aspiring students. The first disadvantage is the lack of instructor face time. Students who like or require personalised attention from teachers normally will not do well in an online education set up. Second, there is some sort of stigma or misconceptions associated with distance learning. However, distance learning is gradually being embraced by more mainstream colleges and universities.

Third, distance learning requires new skills and technological knowledge. This is particularly hard for students who lack computer skills or fear change and new technologies. Some amount of time may be needed to get used to this type of learning. Fourth, distance learning lacks social interaction. Beyond e-mail, chat room, or forum interaction, it may be hard to plan gatherings such as parties and outings. Fifth, the freedom that distance learning provides will not be advantageous for procrastinators and those who lack self-motivation because there is no one to push them into making time for online classes. Sixth, distance learning offers very little support. Most of the time, students are left on their own and must find their own resources. Finally, distance learning has no campus atmosphere or traditional college experience. Students may long for the beauty of the campus and college spirit, which are lacking in distance learning.
